Noted Kannada writer and actor Girish Karnad passed away at 81. He died in his sleep. He is survived by wife, son and a daughter. Karnad was the 34th Jnanpith awardee. He was ill for the last few months. He breathed his last at his Lavelle Road House in Bengaluru. Master playwright and multi-lingual scholar, Karnad was the creator of a unique genre of historical plays like Tughlaq and Hayavadana. He was born in Matheran, Maharashtra. KM Chaitanya, film director and a close associate of Karnad, said that there is no official ceremony pertaining to Karnad’s death, as per his family’s decision. Chaitanya further urged admires to visit Kalapalli crematorium in Bengaluru to pay their last respects. The family members of late Girish Karnad say that as per the wishes of the writer, there will be no last right rituals. He also didn’t want a State funeral. His wife Saraswathi and Son Raghu have appealed for privacy and asked people, admirers, officials and politicians not to visit their apartment. Indian writer Amitav Ghosh took to social media and mourned Karnad’s demise. He wrote, “Saddened to hear of the passing of Girish Karnad – a great writer and a very important public voice. Thoughts are with @rkarnad and his family.”
