The maximum age limit for the direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors for government and aided colleges has been increased to 40 – 45 years. The Department of Collegiate Education’s commissioner has changed the age limit to 40 years for general candidates, 43 years for categories, and 45 years for SC/ST candidates, according to the Karnataka Education Act. This comes as a welcome move for the colleges. A severe crisis of faculty had prompted the Department of Collegiate Education to write a letter to the State government of Karnataka to fill up the positions at the earliest. There have been several vacancies pending in first grade degree colleges since 2015. An official from the collegiate education department said, “We can now fill up maximum posts in every department that have been left vacant for more than three years. This will also help eligible candidates to apply, who could not apply earlier due to the age criteria.” Earlier, for the direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors, the candidates in general category had to a maximum of 35 years of age, the ones in Group – B and Group – D had to be within 38 years and the ones from backward classes had to be within 40 years.
